Venous Thrombectomy

What is a Venous Thrombectomy?

A venous thrombectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove a vein clot. This procedure is incredibly rare as it is primarily used to treat an uncommon complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) known as phlegmasia cerulea dolens.

If you’re seeking a venous thrombectomy from an experienced vascular specialist, contact Western Vascular Institute today to schedule a consultation in Mesa, Payson, or Florence.

Success of Surgery

A venous thrombectomy procedure has a success rate of 70-100% when used in addition to one or more of the following treatments:

  • Angioplasty and stenting
  • Thrombolysis
  • A vena cava filter
  • Anticoagulant medications

Symptoms Associated with a Venous Thrombectomy

As this is a rare condition, it can be difficult to detect when a venous thrombectomy may be necessary for a patient with DVT. However, some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Severe DVT or phlegmasia cerulea dolens
  • DVT that is resistant to anticoagulation treatments
  • Patients who are pregnant
  • Individuals that should avoid thrombolysis or anticoagulation treatments

Risk Factors

There are of course several different factors associated with complications of a venous thrombectomy such as:

  • Patients above the age of 65
  • Those with bleeding tendencies
  • Individuals allergic to contrast dye
  • Any patient with a related health condition such as hypertension, congestive heart failure, or poor kidney function
