End Stage Renal Disease is the final stage of chronic kidney disease where they kidneys are functioning at 15 percent of less of their normal expected capacity. The kidneys experience complete or near complete failure and are unable to function on their own and if left untreated, is fatal. The only treatment is dialysis and/or a kidney transplant and the only cure is kidney transplant surgery.
ESRD is most often caused by diabetes, but may also be a result of high blood pressure, vascular disease, an autoimmune disease or a genetic disorder.
Common symptoms of ESRD include:
- Weight loss
- Nausea and vomiting
- Difficulty breathing and seizures.
